Our First Trail Ride

Wendy the Wrangler with some horses.

This is Matt's horse Red.

Today was our first trail ride. Wendy is our wrangler. She started the same time as Matt and I. She moved here with her husband Casey. They were in Tombstone prior to starting at 3 Forks. They have been doing this kind of work at various resorts for quite a while. Casey is the staff breakfast cook but helps with the horses as well. When they moved up here from Arizona, they were pulling a decent sized trailer. They were stopped by the border patrol who were convinced they were transporting illegals and even after being stopped, they were followed for some time.
One of the perks of living in the old horse barn is the fact that the horses are still right here. I am told this is not so pleasant in the heat of summer when the wind blows the wrong way. Eva, a fellow waiter has already experienced this. There are three stalls that border the other side of the barn. Her window is in the middle of one of those stalls and level with the horses back end. A couple of days ago, two horses were in that stall and her fresh air was not so fresh as "they were doing their business all day long!"
We had a great first trail ride. I rode Beaner whose name comes from the fact that he is one of the most fragrant horses in the bunch. Matt rode Red. Beaner and Red are friends and don't like to be separated. Matt and I can not get over how green the grass is here. Even at the end of summer it is green as there is so much water everywhere. The two ranch dogs, Rebel and Rowdy accompanied us on our ride. They were a limitless source of energy running this way and that and even finding a deer to chase across our path. We definitely look forward to more trail rides around this beautiful property.
Our first paying guests arrive tomorrow. 18 arrive in the afternoon, leave on Wednesday and then we get in a whole new group. It is full swing until October with fall being particularly busy as we will have a lodge full of fly fisherman and the original rental houses full of Elk hunters.
We have so much to tell everyone but have decided to stick to themed posts. Shall I tell you about the $50,000 antique plates we handle twice a day or the helicopter that lands right outside our front door and is the owners baby? Till next time and we love having comments from everyone so don't be shy!
